The University of Cincinnati is one of only 187 universities in the United States to earn a Research 1 (R1) designation. R1 designation goes to universities that annually issue at least 70 research doctorates (typically PhDs) and have at least $50 million
in research spending. UC is among the top 35 public universities in the entire country when it comes to research expenditures. Those expenditures result in groundbreaking discoveries, patents, jobs, state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced training,
research, scholarship, and creative activities that change lives.

of this happens in a vacuum; it requires an ecosystem of experts, processes, and support systems working together to keep research moving forward. While many of these efforts are largely invisible to the broader campus community, they are essential
to the research enterprise.
The Office of Research helps translate vision into action, identifying opportunities for growth, supporting interdisciplinary collaboration, and investing in areas where UC can have the greatest impact. What can sometimes look like a simple grant from
the outside is actually the result of significant effort.
